  • 6th session of the permanent indicator crossroads - Planetary limits: from transposing the framework to reconstructing the concept – February 9, 2024

Speaker : Damien Rieutor, PhD student in territorial engineering, geography and applied mathematics in the STEEP team at INRIA in Grenoble and the TITA group in Seville

Moderator : Fiona Ottaviani, GEM, research coordinator for the UNESCO Chair towards a culture of Economic Peace.

Summary : « Planetary Limits » are most often described in terms of their environmental aspects: reference status, processes, indicators and biophysical thresholds. This could be called the Planetary Limits framework. It is this biophysical dimension that has been the subject of the main attempts at local transposition, which today provide a picture of the major difficulties of this approach. However, there are many implicit elements underlying this framework: its philosophy, origins, sources of inspiration and social and even anthropological objectives. Together, these implicits and the framework can be called the « concept of Planetary Limits » or the « Safe Operating Space for Humanity » concept.

By fully embracing the concept, new ways of operationalising « Planetary Limits » could emerge.

  • 5th session of the permanent indicator crossroads on the co-benefits of sobriety in approaches to living well – February 2, 2024

This meeting provided an opportunity to present and discuss the ADEME-UNESCO Chair towards a culture of economic peace-Territories in Transition-GEM Transition Campus project on the co-benefits of sobriety in approaches to the good life.

Speakers and moderators :

  • Hélène L'Huillier, researcher and PhD in economics, independent consultant, Transition Campus
  • Fanny Argoud, independent consultant, Transition Campus
  • Fiona Ottaviani, Associate Professor, GEM, UNESCO Chair towards a culture of economic peace, co-holder of the Chair Territoires en transition.

Summary: Many studies have compiled indicators of the good life, quality of life or well-being. However, this literature has mainly focused on the conceptual, technical and political aspects of the indicators, without necessarily highlighting the cross-cutting lessons in terms of the social and environmental sustainability of these approaches. Today, there is no literature review in the field of indicators of good living that highlights the social and environmental co-benefits of a sober lifestyle. The main scientific aim of this research is to produce such a synthesis. Our research question is: is the good life associated with sobriety? If so, which dimensions of the good life are key to sobriety? What do the indicators of good living show about the link between social and environmental sustainability?

  • Rendez-vous croisé de la transition territoriale: the workplace, a niche for inter-species relations ? January 22, 2024

The Territoires en transition chair and the UNESCO chair towards a culture of economic peace at Grenoble Ecole de Management co-organised a meeting on territorial transition on the theme: the workplace, a niche for inter-species relations?

A dog accompanying its human companion to the office, a seagull waiting for the end of the market to come and eat the leftovers: the city - and today the workplace - are becoming spaces for expressing and renegotiating inter-species relations. Beyond our emotional relationship with animals, this goes back to our way of being in the world and in relationships. How does this manifest itself on a daily basis? What does it say about us? What are the implications in the way we use our space?

This meeting provided an opportunity to move away from an anthropocentric and instrumental stance towards other species.

Moderators: Hélène Michel, Professor at Grenoble Ecole de Management, member of the Territoires en transition chair and Fiona Ottaviani, Associate professor, Grenoble Ecole de Management, research coordinator of the UNESCO chair towards a culture of economic peace, co-titular of the Territoires en transition chair.

Speakers :

  • Sandra Krief, Deputy Mayor of Grenoble in charge of sector 4 and the animal condition
  • Boris Collet, Senior Lecturer, Université Savoie Mont-Blanc
  • Hélène Michel, Professor at Grenoble Ecole de Management, member of the Territoires en transition chair

  • Internal seminar of the UNESCO Chair towards a culture of economic peace - Changing the way the socio-economic system works: redefining needs – December 4, 2023

The seminar featured four contributions:

  • one from Virginie Monvoisin (GEM) in connection with her two books on needs
  • one from Fiona Ottaviani (GEM Economic peace Chair) on the Max-Neef approach to needs
  • one from Guillaume Quiquerez, researcher at Centrale Marseille, on desire/need in Dewey's work
  • one from Raffi Duymejian (GEM Economic peace Chair) on desire in Deleuze and the anthropology of economic peace.

Summary : For those wishing to propose a social and ecological alternative to the current economic system and to re-examine the question of values, the notion of need is essential. Thinking about a different socio-economic organisation leads us to question what matters to people, what contributes to the good life and the purposes of production: What is harmful? What is superfluous? What should production focus on? How can we take into account the value of what is produced in the non-profit sector ?

  • Upcoming: 4th session of the permanent crossroads of indicators on the relational capacity indicator (RCI)

For this back-to-school session on October 23, 2023 of the permanent Indicators crossroads, we will have the great pleasure of hearing the Transition Campus team talk about the experience of the relational capacity indicator (RCI), and in particular the work carried out recently in schools by Hélène L'Huillier, Fanny Argoud, Cécile Ezvan, Cécile Renouard, Pierre-Jean Cottalorda and

Juliette Raynal.Two areas of questioning will be at the heart of this session :

The question of appropriation to make these indicators tools for reintegrating the economy. How easy to use over time?

The question - more specific to the new version of the RCI - of the integration of the environmental dimension. How can we strengthen this environmental aspect and link it well to other social dimensions? What components should we include here.

  • Cross-meeting of territorial transition: Territory and living well: an invitation to a paradigm shift by the Arhuacos – October 18, 2022

The Territories in Transition Chair and the UNESCO Chair for a Culture of Economic Peace at Grenoble Ecole de Management co-organized a Territorial Transition Meeting on the theme “Territory and living well: an invitation to a paradigm shift by the Arhuacos ". This event brought together around a hundred people in person and online.

Theme of the meeting : What is good living in the territories? How can we revise our way of understanding the territory and our interrelations? How can we no longer think of ourselves outside of nature and human and non-human communities? This meeting made it possible to explore other paradigms of interrelationships and to question through this prism what our relationship to habitat, territories and resources is. Two representatives of the Arhuaco people, the first people of the Sierra Nevada, testified on how they understand the good life. How can we reclaim this form of being in relationships to think about the transformation of businesses, public policies and territories here and elsewhere ?

Moderator : Fiona Ottaviani, Associate professor Grenoble Ecole de Management, research coordinator of the Economic Peace Chair and co-holder of the Territory in Transition chair

Speakers :

  • Mamo Adolfo Chaparro, spiritual representative of the Arhuaco community
  • Anaïs Guéguen-Perrin, architectural researcher at AE&CC / ENSAG / Université Grenoble Alpes
  • Fiona Ottaviani, Associate professor Grenoble Ecole de Management, research coordinator of the Economic Peace Chair and co-holder of the Territory in Transition chair
  • Calixto Suarez, messenger of the Arhuaco people
  • 1st permanent crossroads of indicators - Donut du Grand Genève – October 10, 2022

A first meeting of the crossroads was organized on October 10, 2022.Speaker: Camille Gilloots, researcher at the University of Lausanne, presented her approach around the Grand Geneva donut.Animation of the session :

  • Fiona Ottaviani, Associate professor, research coordinator, Unesco chair toward a culture of economic peace, Grenoble Ecole de Management;
  • Hélène Clot, director of strategy, innovation and citizen relations at Grenoble-Alpes Métropole

The discussion focused on the criteria for choosing the set of indicators (type of indicator according to DPSIR framework, number of indicators, comparability/specificity and complexity/simplicity) and the impact of these choices from a point of view scientific and operational. This entry allowed us to address the question of comparability: do we choose all the same indicators, particularly for overall data? How do we go further in sharing social and environmental data? With what is it relevant to compare (thresholds, space, time) ?

  • 2nd International Forum for Good Living – June 29 to July 1, 2022

Supported by the UNESCO Chair for a Culture of Economic Peace at Grenoble Ecole de Management, the CCFD Terre Solidaire, Grenoble-Alpes Métropole, the City of Grenoble, Grenoble Alpes University, and the FAIR collective, the International Forum for Good Living Since its origins, it has been intended to be a participatory event. Following the success of the 2018 edition, the 2nd International Forum for Good Living wanted to take a further step in order to accelerate the change of compass, the urgent necessity of which has been reinforced by recent crises.

  • The objectives of the forum were threefold :

1) Accelerate the change of compass;

2) Translate good living into actions and indicators, between environmental ceiling and social floor;

3) Support, expand and nourish the community of actors of this change

  • It was based on two calls for contributions :

1) one for all change actors;

2) a call for scientific communication validated by a multidisciplinary scientific committee.

This edition brought together 250 speakers and presenters over three days. 25 countries were represented. The event included 75 meetings, 5 plenaries, 9 round tables, 52 workshops, 10 scientific conference sessions, cultural events, etc.

A multidisciplinary scientific conference led by the UNESCO Chair for a Culture of Economic Peace respecting the usual academic rules was organized at the very heart of the international forum for good living. An extremely rare thing in scientific practices, the scientific conference was accessible to all in a logic of open science. The sessions of the scientific conference were instantly translated into French and English to allow as many people as possible to access these times. This logic of open science worked very well and made it possible to make scientific knowledge accessible to as many people as possible.
